USA Team Handball today announced its selection of 48 teenage athletes to train at a one-week residential camp in Colorado Springs, CO, from Aug. 2 to 8, 2009, and vie for spots on Youth National teams to compete internationally. Twenty-eight male athletes and 20 female athletes have been selected; four more females shall be chosen and announced in the near future. The participating teens, hailing from all over the United States, developed their handball skills in areas as close as Colorado Springs and as far as Iceland. Athletes born in 1992 and 1993 will compete at the camp for places on the USA youth national squads. The aspiring National Team athletes will receive six days of two-a-day practices plus classroom lessons. Athletes will stay at the U.S. Olympic Training center and receive individualized instruction. The camp will be led by a team of USA Team Handball instructors, including: Mariusz Wartalowicz, Technical Director Marko Brezic, West Regional Coach Kathy Rex, 1988 Olympian and Coach "The overarching mission of this camp is to rebuild and establish high standards of dedication, full participation and perseverance," said Wartalowicz. "Although it is a (U17) selection camp, it is a developmental camp as well, as some athletes are 18. We are looking to identify pillars for other Youth and Junior teams."
